Scorchers stumble again

Malawi Women’s National Football Team, Scorchers yesterday lost 3-1 to Ghana’s Black Queens in an international friendly played at Ziaida Complex in Casablanca, Morocco.

Israel-based Black Queens forward Doris Boaduwaa netted a hat-trick while Tendai Sani was on target for Scorchers.

The match was the second friendly for Scorchers, who were initially invited by Royal Morocco Football Federation to face Atlas Lionesses which they lost 4-2.

Coach Lovemore Fazili made some changes to the first team, resting Kukoma Ntopwa Women goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo for Silver Strikers Women’s Irene Sibale.

Scorchers were also without Kazakhstan-based duo of attacker Vanessa Chikupila and defender Bernadette Mkandawire.

In their absence, the tactician opted for Ascent Academy defender Maureen Kenneth and Nyasa Bullets Women’s attacker Tendai Sani.

Apart from the three changes, Fazili still hard the bulk of his players led by captain Tabitha Chawinga and Rose Kabzere who both play in France as well as Georgia-based forward Sabina Thom alongside usual campaigners Leticia Chinyamula, Ireen Khumalo, Rose Alufandika, Faith Chimzimu and Asimenye Simwaka.

Sani proved she deserved the starting berth as she put Malawi in the lead just in the 15th minute.

But just as in the match against Morocco when the Scorchers gave up a 2-0 lead, they also lost concentration and gave up the lead.

The Black Queens levelled in the 23rd minute through Doris Boaduwaa from the spot after a handball in the box.

Ten minutes later, the Israel Women’s Premier League’s Hapoel Jerusalem striker netted the second.

In the second-half, Fazili made four changes, bringing in Justina Jumbo, Zainab Kapanda, Chisomo Banda and Jessie Yosefe  in for Chimzimu, Sani, Victoria Mkwala and Thom.

But there was little impact as Ghana netted the third in the 81st minute, Boaduwaa doing the damage again.

The Scorchers are preparing for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) qualifiers’ final qualification round against Angola in October.

Malawi qualified for the second round after their opponents Congo Brazzaville withdrew from the competition.
